SUSTAINABILITY

Custom Arctic Adventure Lofoten is a specialized adventure tourism company based in the Lofoten Islands, Norway. We focus on creating tailor-made Arctic experiences that showcase the region’s dramatic landscapes, rich wildlife, and unique cultural heritage. We operate Isqueen (our boat) and an 8-seat electric Mercedes eVito for transport and sightseeing. With a strong emphasis on safety, sustainability, and local knowledge, Custom Arctic Adventure Lofoten provides authentic, small-group experiences that allow visitors to explore the Arctic environment responsibly and in close connection with nature.

POLICY AND GOALS

AMBITION

  • We are going to be socially and environmentally responsible.

  • We are going to be a leading example for other similar companies in Lofoten when it comes to sustainability and taking responsibility locally.

  • We believe that if we take responsibility and care for the people and the society (planet) in everything we do, that is the best prerequisite for profit and a sustainable way of operating the company.

MEANS

Our highest priority with regard to environmental protection is to avoid incidents/accidents related to our maritime operations. We are a small company with a modest footprint under normal operations. This means that the potential gains from environmental measures in day-to-day operations are limited. We operate in a sensitive region that includes both a National Park and protected nature areas. Therefore, any accident or maritime casualty caused by us would have major local environmental consequences.

We have measurable elements both in our safety management system and in our local sustainability efforts, which we will follow up continously to ensure that our activities are carried out in a safe and responsible manner. This is of the utmost importance for our guests, the local community, and ourselves. It will help safeguard the local environment and ensure sustainable operation of the company.

To achieve a holistic and sustainable operation within the company, the following areas are important and shall be prioritized:

  1. Any available capacity of ISQUEEN will be utilized to give back to the local community. This will be done by being available as a resource for the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Northern Norway. We are already on standby for this assignment today. Furthermore, we will cooperate with local resources and organizations to strengthen and further develop local emergency response capacity.

  2. Use our operations to serve as custodians of local history and culture, sharing this heritage with our guests.

  3. Training and recruitment related to the Blue Flag program within the tourism industry in Lofoten. Here, we can be important contributors by raising awareness and motivating the industry toward a development of more sustainable and environmentally friendly operations and activities.

  4. Contribute to increased understanding among our guests, through our operations and knowledge sharing, of the interconnections and vulnerabilities of nature, both locally and globally. Through our focus on environment and sustainability in our activities, we aim to achieve a positive, attitude-shaping effect among our guests.

  5. We will set aside one day each year to contribute to local beach clean-up initiatives. Plastic pollution, particularly from the fishing industry, is a major local challenge, and we want to make a difference in this area.

  6. Our contributions to the local community are also expected to have a positive impact on the industry’s reputation at the local level.

The following measures will also be focus areas:

  1. Leave-no-trace practices shall be applied in all activities.

  2. All waste generated during activities shall be brought back and sorted for recycling.

  3. Minimal use of single-use items.

  4. Products used on board ISQUEEN shall, to the greatest extent possible, be non-harmful to the marine environment.

  5. Contribute to year-round tourism in Lofoten by being available throughout the entire year.

ENDS

  • We are going to be socially and environmentally responsible.

  • We are going to be a leading example for other similar companies in Lofoten when it comes to sustainability and taking responsibility locally.

  • We believe that if we take responsibility and care for the people and the society (planet) in everything we do, that is the best prerequisite for profit and a sustainable way of operating the company.

  • The measurable tool we are using to obtain this ambition is our environmental action plan.

BLUE FLAG CERTIFICATION

blue_flag_rgb.jpg

Sustainability has been important to us since we started the company in 2024. We have done many of the right things, but have started a more analytical and systematic approach during the last part of 2025. We are currently working with Blue Flag to get Isqueen certified the spring of 2026. This has been a rewarding process so far and we are aiming at meeting their strict criteria for certification.

The certification comes with obligations and high expectations to us and the way we operate. The certification aligns well with our ambition to be a leading company in Lofoten as a trusted, reliable, responsible and sustainable partner. The relation to our private clients, business customers, the environment and the citizens of the local community being equally important to us.

Blue Flag Certification is an internationally recognized eco-label awarded to beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators that meet high standards of environmental management, safety, water quality, and environmental education. The certification is overseen by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a non-governmental organization headquartered in Denmark, and is granted annually to sites that comply with strict criteria.

The Blue Flag program was first launched in France in 1985 as a national initiative to encourage municipalities to improve coastal water quality and environmental practices. In 1987, the program expanded to other European countries during the European Year of the Environment, and soon afterward became an international scheme under the coordination of FEE. Over the decades, Blue Flag has grown significantly and is now implemented in more than 50 countries across Europe, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, and the Asia-Pacific region.

To earn Blue Flag status, beaches must meet criteria in four main categories: excellent bathing water quality, environmental management (including waste disposal and sanitation), safety and services (such as lifeguards and first aid), and environmental education and information. Marinas and boating operators are assessed using similar principles, with additional emphasis on pollution prevention and sustainable operations. Compliance is monitored regularly, and the flag can be withdrawn if standards are not maintained.

Today, the Blue Flag is widely regarded as a symbol of environmental excellence and sustainable tourism. It helps travellers identify clean and responsibly managed coastal areas, while encouraging local authorities and operators to protect natural ecosystems and promote long-term environmental stewardship. Along with the Blue Flag, the Foundation for Environmental Education also develops another eco-label for accomodations: Green Key.
